Prototype 2 Review

In 2009 we get served an amazing open world game where we assumed the identity of Alex Mercer, a shape-shifter with no memory of his past; Three years later Prototype 2 is back with a new hero on a quest to avenge the death of his family or so it seems.

The new hero Sgt James Heller returning from duty gets to face his wife killer but instead get contaminated with the Mercer virus which grants him powers beyond beliefs.
The story of Prototype 2 is simply about revenge, although fans of the original might not like the change, you still have to mangle yourself against Blackwatch and Genteck troops for secret information, prototypes locations and more.
Though one might say it's a bit weak, but what else do you expect if revenge is the core of the story?

Prototype 2 visually looks sharper, crisper, gorier than the original; with a huge open world and much Blackwatch troops and bloodthirsty infected on screen at one time you normally expect screen tearing, but the engine performs very well.

There is a lot of improvements over the original, from the amazing background sound and combat to the camera, powers and abilities with a huge amount of side missions and infinite spawning of infected in the red zone, you’re in for 15 plus hours but some missions felt repetitive and forgettable.

You have Blacknet side missions and game collectibles to dive into to get more of the story and a huge ability list to master by hunting and consuming Blacknet targets for side missions location and unlocking more abilities for Heller, then you have Radnet online challenges updated every few days if you want to climb on top of the leaderboard, grab some free packs and more. You have a new game plus after you finish the story too for insane difficulty if you dare.

Compared to Alex Mercer, James Heller seems a bit clumsy, boring with very bad language but his claws, hammerfist, tendrils, whipfist, blade, shield, devastator, Leader Pack powers and abilities make Mercer looks like a baby, in fact Heller might just be the most powerful video game character if you accumulate all his tools in one bag.

The original game surprised us, we expect too much from the successor, at the end it comes down to one question: did you enjoy and would play again? This is entertainment and I enjoyed every moment of Prototype 2, and would recommend to anyone fan of action games, gory and the original to give it a chance.
